CEON – Otvoreno pismo ministru nauke

Sign the petition to protect EU research budget – www.no-cuts-on-research.eu

Dear young researchers,

The next weeks and months will be crucial for determining the EU research budget for the period of 2014-2020. Before the summit of the heads of states and governments scheduled for 22/23 November, several EU member states announced that they will demand cuts on the total EU budget. Next to that, if cuts are unavoidable, the research budget would likely be attacked first as other policy areas have strong lobby groups.
Cuts in the the EU research budget would strongly affect PhD candidates and post-docs. The Marie Curie Actions are well-known and highly recognised and appreciated by young researchers. What may be less known is for example that almost 20.000 PhD candidates and Post-Docs are working in projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC) in a team with ERC Grantees.
In a letter published today in major newspapers
42 Nobel Laureates and 5 Fields Medallists have expressed their concern about the discussion on the EU research budget, adding  that “The younger generation of researchers will seek to make their voices heard and governments should listen”.
Younger Generation?   That’s you!  How can you get active?
– Sign the petition to protect EU research funding:
– Spread the word – share the call in social networks
– Mobilise your colleagues. Ask the head of your doctoral school to send out an email to all young researchers in the department.
– Use your contacts to the media or to political parties to make the case for research
Show that the young researchers are a powerful group in Europe.

Eurodoc Annual Conference 2013 Lisbon

EURODOC is co-organising together with ABIC (the Portuguese national Assotiation)  its International Conference and Annual General Assembly. The event will happen in Lisbon at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation from the 4th to the 7th of April 2013. EURODOC 2013 Conference theme is Europe’s Grand Societal Challenges. The event aims to create an in-depth debate over a number of key issues the European Union (EU) identified for European research within the areas of sustainable innovation and knowledge-based economy. Specifically, EURODOC intends on discussing the role of early stage researchers in tackling issues like:

  1. Global warming, the tightening of energy supplies, security, ageing societies, pandemics and public health;
  1. The development of research helping to integrate citizens living in the EU by respecting differences, while reducing all sorts of communication barriers, discrimination, or marginalisation, that is, by contributing to consolidate a common European identity.

The EU has created programmes such as “Horizon 2020”, as a means of boosting research, innovation and competitiveness in Europe. Horizon 2020 brings together EU research and innovation funding under a single programme. It focuses on turning scientific breakthroughs into innovative products and services providing citizens with business opportunities and better living conditions. At the same time it simplifies rules and procedures to attract more high level researchers and a broader range of innovative businesses.

Another example concerns the EU programme “Europe 2020”, where Europe’s growth strategy is outlined. Europe 2020 aims at developing tools to reach a more inclusive and sustainable economy being its goals set on employment, innovation, education, social inclusion and climate/energy. One of its structural axis is the framework “Energy 2020” containing five pillars for action: 1) increasing the use of renewable energy; 2) developing the internal integrated market; 3) ameliorating safety and security in terms of production and transportation; 4) promoting research and innovation policies; 5) bettering the exploitation of geopolitical strength.

Having this in mind, EURODOC 2013 annual conference will include four plenary sessions with distinguished speakers from various European, international and national institutions and organisations. The topics are as follows:

  • Plenary Session I: The EU 2020 Framework Programmes for Research and Sustainable Innovation
  • Plenary Session II: Sustainable society: new trends in research
  • Plenary Session III: Growing in a healthy environment: new trends in research
  • Plenary Sessions IV: Science, communication and social change

Three workshops will also be available.

The two last days are solely dedicated to EURODOC Annual General Meeting (AGM) where there will be the presentation of the Administrative Board’s annual report, given by the President; the presentation of the financial report, including the accounts, given by the Treasurer; the ratification of decisions taken by the Administrative Board since the last General Meeting and the election of new a Governing Board and Secretariat.
