Opsti ciljevi projekta:

Eurodoc konferencija 2013 Lisabon – Press Release

 EURODOC’13 KONFERENCIJA

Međunarodna konferencija i godišnja skupština  ,, Najveći evropski društveni izazovi : uloga istraživača u ranoj fazi istraživanja“, Lisabon Portugalija

Konferenciju su organizovali EURODOC (European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers) i portugalsko udruženje mladih istraživača ABIC (Associacao Des Bolseiros de Investigacao cientifica ) , sa temom “ Najveći evropski društveni izazovi: uloga istraživača u ranoj fazi istraživanja” .

  • Plenarna sesija III : Rad i istraživanja u okviru održivog društva
  • Plenarna sesija IV : Nauka , komunikacije i socijalne promene.

PRESS RELESE – EURODOC’13 International Conference and Annual General Meeting LISBON-PORTUGAL

Europe’s Grand Societal Challenges

The Role of Early Stage Researchers

The working conditions of young researchers, their future perspectives and the role of scientific research in society were the main topics debated at the EURODOC’13 conference that took place at the Fundação Caloust Gulbenkian, Lisbon, Portugal, between 4th and 5th of April, which hosted 300 researchers from different countries.

The event was jointly organised by EURODOC (The European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers) and the Portuguese Association of the Grant-holding Researchers (ABIC- Associação dos Bolseiros de Investigação Científica), with the theme “Europe’s Grand Societal Challenges: the role of Early Stage Researchers”. The conference was opened by Slobodan Radicev, president of Eurodoc, and André Janeco, president of ABIC.

Members of EURODOC (35 national associations of doctorates and young researchers from 34 countries of the European Union and the Council of Europe) highlighted the economic situation in Europe, and the challenges that researchers, in the beginning of their career, have to face. Slobodan Radicev said that “We have to fight for our rights and our role in and outside research institutions, no one else is going to do that for us. We need to take responsibility and give our maximum to make Europe and all European societies a better place for research and living.” André Janeco stressed the fact that this conference was held for the first time in Portugal, “a country with its difficulties and its particularities in research, but also in economic, social and labour conditions”. He expressed his hope that “we can reinforce wider visions on justice and solidarity policies in Europe”.

Based on these themes in mind, EURODOC’13 held four plenary sessions with distinguished speakers from various International, European and national organisations. The topics were:

  • Plenary session I: The EU 2020 Framework Programmes for Research and Sustainable Innovation
  • Plenary session II: Growing in a Healthy Environment: New trends in Research
  • Plenary Session III: Working and research within the Framework of a Sustainable Society
  • Plenary Session IV: Science, Communication and Social Change

Positive evaluation by participants

Feedback from the participants was very positive. One of the highlighted points was the relation between EUROPE 2020 and Horizon 2020 and the practical cases that reveal the societal challenges tackled by researchers. “I liked, in a special way, that it was focused during the first day on the theoretical and political questions, and during the second day on the social aspects of our daily work as researchers”, explained Catarina Costeira, PhD candidate from Portugal. The diversity of the themes analysed was also one of the aspects praised by the participants. “They invited a lot of speakers with a large reputation and from different areas”, said a PhD candidate representing Belgium. “In this event we had the opportunity to discuss different topics. All of this brings an additional value to the conference”, added a member from Macedonia. The precarious financial condition of some countries was also discussed during the two days of the event that combined, in the same place, different researchers from all over Europe. “The divulgationof the problems that young researchers have to live with should be one of the aspects financed by European Union”, said one Greek researcher. “This event should happen more often”, concluded a French researcher.

Annual General Meeting

At Eurodoc’s Annual General Meeting, which took place on April 6-7, a new Eurodoc Board was elected. Slobodan Radicev (Serbia) was re-elected as President of Eurodoc, with the other positions being filled by Kristina Majsec (Vice-president – Croatia), John Peacock (Secretary – Belgium), Patrick Tuijp (Treasurer – The Netherlands), and Jovan Shopovski (Macedonia), Marcin Styrna (Poland) and Ivo Neto (Portugal) as General Board Members.

In the upcoming year, the newly elected board will have its mission: strengthening the position of Eurodoc as a stakeholder in the European research area and higher education area; promoting the importance of the work of PhD candidates and young researchers for improvement of their social conditions; strengthening and reinforcing internal communication with individual volunteers and member associations, as well as institutional partners. The next international conference and annual general meeting, EURODOC’14, will be organized by DOSz (Doktoranduszok Országos Szövetsége) and hosted in Budapest, Hungary.

Marie Curie Actions: Commission invites bids for €227m in research grants

Marie Curie Actions: Commission invites bids for €227m in research grants

The European Commission is inviting bids for the final tranche of Marie Curie fellowship grants allotted under the current seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7, 2007-13). Some €227 million, the highest single amount made available through the Marie Curie Actions fund, will be awarded to around 1 000 experienced researchers this year. The application process runs until 14 August 2013.

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for the Marie Curie fund, said: “In times of budgetary rigour, public spending must be directed to policies that generate the most benefits for citizens and the European economy. Our Marie Curie fellowship grants ensure support for excellent research in areas like healthcare, which can result in breakthroughs that transform the lives of millions. Recent Marie Curie beneficiaries have carried out ground-breaking research aimed at tackling Hepatitis C and malaria, for instance.”

Marie Curie individual fellowships support the mobility of researchers within and beyond Europe – as well as helping to attract the best foreign researchers to work in the EU. “The prestige of the Marie Curie Actions and the excellent package they offer motivated my application. They enabled me to work in London and to establish a large network of international collaborations,” commented Armando Arias Esteban from Madrid, who did a two-year intra-European fellowship at Imperial College.

Individual fellowships will continue to be provided under the new Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions as part of the Horizon 2020 programme, which starts in 2014.

Background

What are the Marie Curie Actions?

Marie Curie Actions promote research careers in Europe through funding schemes managed by the European Commission’s Research Executive Agency. The 2007-2013 budget for the Marie Curie Actions amounts to €4.7 billion. Nearly half the funding (48%) supports PhD training for researchers, with 24% allocated to fellowships for researchers with more than four years of post-Masters’ experience. The remainder supports industry-academia partnerships, career integration grants (for researchers returning to the EU), exchange schemes and specific support actions such as EU Researchers’ Night.

Since 2007, more than 4 000 Marie Curie fellowship grants have been awarded to researchers working in 50 countries and representing more than 90 nationalities. Nearly €780 million has been allocated so far for individual fellowships, with an average grant of around €195 000. The grant normally covers two years’ salary, a mobility allowance, research costs and overheads for the host institution. Around 37% of the beneficiaries are women. The leading destinations for Marie Curie fellows are the UK, followed by the United States, France, Germany and Switzerland. 75 other countries also host Marie Curie fellows.

How do the individual fellowships work?

Individual researchers submit proposals for funding in liaison with their planned host organisation. Independent experts select the researchers who will receive funding, based on their excellence, innovative research and training approach, as well as the support offered by the host organisation and the researcher’s future career prospects.

Three types of individual fellowships are supported:

  • Intra-European Fellowships (IEF) support researchers acquiring knowledge and new skills in another country within Europe.
  • International Outgoing Fellowships (IOF) offer researchers the chance to acquire new knowledge in a high-level organisation outside Europe. As part of the grant agreement, the researchers have to return to Europe and share this knowledge.
  • International Incoming Fellowships (IIF) enable researchers from outside Europe to be trained within a European institution.

What will happen to individual fellowships after 2014?

Individual fellowships will be maintained through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under Horizon 2020, with the option to spend a period in another type of organisation (e.g. a company). The details of the programme are still under discussion by Member States and the European Parliament. The European Commission expects to publish the first new call for individual fellowship applications by the end of 2013.
